How do I plant Hostas correctly?

I am needing to know how deep to plant Hostas, in sun or shade, and do I pack dirt tightly around them. Trying to get them planted this morning before it gets too hot!!!

Hostas are pretty hardy. I have them planted in both sun %26amp; shade gardens. Dig a hole larger and deeper than the root ball of your plant. Fill the hole with water and then place the plant in the hole. Cover the remaining space with dirt and tamp down lightly. Water the newly planted hosta daily for a few days and it should be set.





Mine flowered the very next year -- pretty pinkish purple flowers. Watch out though, the deer love to eat hostas. So I plant daffodils near my hostas as deer won't eat daffodils.
Reply:Plant about 4-6 inches deep, they like sun or shade, just keep them watered god for first 3 months.
Reply:there is no specail way. they will grow good anywhere. i have lots in the sun and some in the shade as well. the only thing i think you have to know about hosta is to cut the stalks after they are passe as far down as you can after the season ends.
Reply:Hostas are shade plants. Is there a tag on them with planting instructions? If not I plant up to the top of the soil from the pot and tightly pack dirt around. I also on any plant make a circle with the perimeter of the circle built up kind of like a little well several inches from the plant to catch water.
Reply:Hosta are generally shade plants. They will take some full sun. Plant the entire root ball. Don't cover the stem above the level they are presently potted at. As with all transplants do firm the soil around them. (You shouldn't have to smash and compact the dirt.)





Always a good rule of green thumb is to scarify the roots before planting and give them a generous drink of root stimulator after planting. Fertilome makes a good stimulator. Or you can use a mild solution of Miracle Grow or similar fertilizer.

Reply:You cant hardly mess it up as long as the roots are covered you got it right. every three years or so split the plants up and spread them out. we bought four plants back in '97 and they have multiplied into over twenty! Happy gardening :)
Reply:Bury the roots 6-8 inches deep, with a gap of 2 - 3 inches around. Pack the dirt firmly, but not hard. And then water.





If you're really concerned, add a little Miracle Gro to the mix...





Hostas are damned resilient plants... I don't think you can hurt them too much without them recovering and growing like crazy,
