Is it bad to water plants when the sun is shining on them?

I heard it was. If it is what does it do to them like does it stunt their growth, dry them out worse or what?

Is it bad to water plants when the sun is shining on them?
The problem with watering plants when the sun is shining is not so much with the plants but with the water supply. Plants are happy to get water whenever they need it, provided they don't get too much, and the water temperature is not too different from the soil temperature. (They prefer to get the water down at the roots, not at the leaves.) However, if you water during the hot part of a sunny day, there will be a lot of evaporative loss of the water, so the plants won't get as much benefit per volume of water provided. If your water supply is unlimited, that's not a problem--just give them more water when it's hot and sunny. But for most of us, and certainly for the planet, water is either limited or costly, so it's better for our pocketbooks to water plants in the evening after the sun goes down or very early in the morning so that the water has a chance to soak into the ground before the sun gets at it and evaporates it.

Reply:water as needed, but outside plants i use a ground soak,don't water the foliage as it will burn the plants, if a plant needs water, its needs water, not in the am or pm, plants dont have a timer, lawns are best watered in the early am with a good soaking of at least 1-2" maybe 3 times per week
Reply:I think it is because the water will evaporate before they can absorb it. And you want to make sure they get a good drink, as hot as it has been. [here in S.C. anyways] The evening is the best time to water.
Reply:this can cause damage to the leaves, scorch-marks, if it dries off too quickly. i'm not sure how that happens, i just know that it does.

I just asked a related question:

Reply:It's okay usually. The problem is when you water during the hottest part of the day, when the sunlight is the most direct. The water evaporates from the plants, and there might be other things it does. I just know that watering your grass/plants during the middle of the day is not the best and will probably leave you with a brown yard. ^^;;
