I wanna plant some flowers today?

I usually get marigolds because they seem to do well, but want to try something different this year. I live in Western New York. the space I am planting in is sun in the morning, shade in the afternoon.

I wanna plant some flowers today?
Hi, that sounds just like the front of my house - sun til about 2pm and then it's completely shaded, so I've been planting flowers that like full sun/partial shade, and the annual flowers from KMart (Hertel Ave) have been growing really well for me, plus I saved quite a few pennies by not shopping for everything at Home Depot!! I picked up: geraniums, ageratum, petunias and marigolds a couple of weeks ago, so they're already in the ground and growing with new buds - very impressive!! The mums (perennial), daisies (perennial), salvia (perennial), daylilies (perennial), delphinium (perennial), lupine (perennial) and foxglove (perennial) I all ordered from Michigan Bulb Co because I'm converting the bed into a perennial garden that will bloom all summer and into fall but filling it with the annuals until they mature. Best wishes!
Reply:I live in PA, so I belive you are only a half a zone different than me.

For annuals, you will get the longest lasting blooms, usually till frost. These are the best to plant, especially at this time of year (perennials usually should be planted in late fall or early spring).

My suggestions for you, keeping your growing zone and light in mind . . .

Annuals: petunias, veronica blue salvia, Nemisia, coleus (lots of variety and a wonderful plant!), snapdragons, wax begonias (the darker leaved ones can handle more sun), calibrachoa (aka million bells), zinnias (they love sun)

Perennials: autumn joy sedum, daylillys (stella d'oro blooms the longest), butterfly bush (these get huge), hostas (the darker green leaved variety will do better the more sun you have), bleeding hearts

hope this helps!
Reply:Me too! lol I plan to plant some more flowers, make another garden today.

Marigolds are nice. They are birght and cheerful, and they keep all sorts of garden pests away!

You could try to mix it up a bit, though, with some other annual and perrenials. Some other easy to grow annuals are Pansy, Petunia, Zinnia. I like to see Geranium in any garden, classic!

To add texture, consider some foliage plants along with the flowers. Coleus, Caladium, Hosta, Dusty Miller..

Since you have afternoon shade, you could consider Impatiens, Lobelia, Ageratum..

Good luck, and have fun! =)
Reply:You could grow some wave petunias for color. There is a fuschia colored one that is out of this world! Or how about some zinnias? They come in every color and the heighs vary from 10 inches to over three feet tall.

One thing you should know is that your marigolds were likely a deterent to rabbits. You may thus still want to plant a few of these -- but change it up a little. Marigolds come in a wide variety. Try some different types if you want to change the look.
Reply:Just go to where you shop at and ask the sales assocaite for advice. They are usually very helpful.
