I am growing some Jalapeno chilli plants under grow lights. I turn the light on first thing in the morning then turn it off last thing at night. But what would happen if I left the light on 24hours a day everyday? Would the plants benefit from the extra light or do they require periods of complete darkness in order to sustain a health photosynthetic cycle?
What will happen if my plants recieve sun light 24 hours a day every day?
When Plants Get Too Much Sun
Plants rely on a carotenoid to protect themselves from overexposure to light.
Plants protect themselves from excess light, which can lead to oxidative damage to chlorophyll and other key photosynthetic pigments
Zeaxanthin, a carotenoid known to be produced by plants in response to bright sunlight, is responsible for the protective effect.
Exposing spinach leaves to intense light triggers the formation of zeaxanthin cation radicals. These cation radicals form when zeaxanthin binds to potentially dangerous photoexcited chlorophyll molecules. The zeaxanthin gives up an electron to the excited chlorophyll, yielding a chlorophyll anion radical and a zeaxanthin cation radical. These products subsequently undergo charge recombination, allowing the excited-state energy of chlorophyll to be safely dissipated as heat.
This process is known as de-excitation.
Reply:If the plant your growing i is a bean stalk it will grow way,way up in the sky to a castle. There you will find the goose that lays the golden eggs. But watch out for the big angry giant guards the goose.Or your goose may be cooked! If you had plans on stealing the goose.
Reply:Yes they would benefit. Plants do not need to sleep as we do. They will continue to photosynthesize as long as the light is on. There is one drawback to all this in that they will not flower without periods of darkness. The reason for this is believed to be that the flowering cycle is switched on by an unknown chemical messenger which builds up within the plant. This chemical breaks down in light so in order for the level to build up enough to switch on the flowering you need periods of darkness. You can even flower individual parts of a plant by putting a bag over part of the plant to cut out the light but you would need to do this periodically to simulate periods of day and night.
Reply:It either dies or become codependent. If ur plant receives more light it will require more water to survive. All in all, I don't think the plant will benefit from the extra light, I think it would cripple it!
Reply:it will surely die, light activates auxins in the plant (auxins is the growth hormones) so you the growth rate will increase exponentially consuming energy and all stored starch until the rate of respiration exceeds the rate of photosynthesis as more starch is demanded than the available and so the plant will grow faster but with thin weak stem and small leaves (this condition is named etiolated plant) until the plant dies soonly of starvation.
That's why god created day and night as if it was all die all plants will die destroying it's trophic level and accordingly all the consumers (animals) will die as the plant (producer) is the main source of food.
