I hear it likes lots of sun. I plan to plant it in my south yard but my property is not very wide. It gets a lot of shade and I don't want to plant it in the very middle. Is morning or evening sun best for this tree. It will get a little bit of both but one will be predominant. Basically should I plant this tree SE or SW?
Which side of the yard is best to plant a cherry fruit tree?
either will be fine, i have one each side and they crop equally well. there are some self fertile varieties' e.g. 'stella'
when in doubt, ask our ken!

following my own advice, that entry suggests east facing wall not so good as west, (this might be because it would be drier, rather than a light thing or might be to avoid frost melt damamge on early blossom) and heavier crop in full sun.
Reply:of course, it's academic; the birds always get them first unless you net the tree... Report It
Reply:You need a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight for good fruit production. Cherries also need to be planted next to another variety of cherry for pollination. If you only have enough space to plant one tree, make sure you get a variety with multiple grafts or varieties on one tree, otherwise you won't get any fruit no matter how much sun the tree gets.
Reply:Plant it where it gets the most sun. . . either will do but place it where it gets the intense rays..
